Study start-up aid according to §56 BAföG
Since 5th September 2024, students have been able to apply for federal study start-up aid. Studienstarthilfe can only be applied for online at www.bafoeg-digital.de
With the current changes to BAföG, the study start-up grant was introduced as a funding instrument in accordance with §§ 56 ff BAföG. Students can receive a grant of 1,000 Euros to finance everything they need to start their studies. This can be, for example, a laptop, books or a deposit for accommodation. Students in particular financial need who have received one of the following social benefits in the month before the start of their university studies are eligible for funding. Students up to the age of 25 who are enrolling for full-time studies for the first time are eligible to apply.
If you receive one of the benefits listed below and have not yet reached the age of 25, you can submit an application to the Office for Educational Support (Amt für Ausbildungsförderung) within the first two months (usually by 31 November for the winter semester) after the start of your studies.
No. 1: Citizen's allowance or benefits for trainees
No. 2: Benefits for living expenses according to the Third Chapter of the Twelfth Book of the Social Code (SGB XII)
No. 3: Basic security benefits in old age and in the event of reduced earning capacity in accordance with Chapter Four of Book Twelve of the Social Code
No. 4: Benefits for subsistence in accordance with § 93 SGB XIV
No. 5: Supplementary assistance with living expenses pursuant to Section 145 (1) SGB XIV in conjunction with Section 27a BVG in the version applicable on 31 December 2023
No. 6: Benefits in accordance with the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act
No. 7: Child supplement according to § 6a of the Federal Child Benefit Act (BKGG)
No. 8: Housing benefit in accordance with the Housing Benefit Act (WoGG)
No. 9: According to § 56 paragraph 1 sentence 4 BAföG: Child and youth welfare benefits according to § 91 paragraph 1 of the Eighth Book of the Social Code (SGB VIII)
